The Health Benefits of Drinking Green Tea

In 1994 the Journal of the National Cancer Institute published the results of an epidemiological study indicating that drinking green tea reduced the risk of oesophageal cancer in Chinese men and women by nearly sixty percent. University of Purdue researchers recently concluded that a compound in green tea inhibits the growth of cancer cells. There is also research indicating that drinking green tea lowers total cholesterol levels, as well as improving the ratio of good (HDL) cholesterol to bad (LDL) cholesterol.

A few of the health benefits of drinking green tea:

  • A Japanese trial found that drinking at least four cups of green tea daily could lower the severity of heart disease in men.
  • A study done at McGill University in Montreal found that the antioxidants in green tea could successfully shrink prostate tumours in mice.
  • Chinese studies have shown links between green tea consumption and lowered  of stomach, pancreatic, oesophageal, prostate and colorectal cancer.
  • Green tea is loaded with antioxidants: the free-radical substances that increase the body’s ability to ward off disease and slow down the ageing process. These antioxidants  improve the elasticity of blood vessels.
  • Green tea has little processing, allowing the natural antioxidants to remain intact and concentrated.
  • Green tea may produce a protective and cleansing effect on the liver. Animal studies show that green tea protects the liver from the negative effects of toxic substances such as alcohol.
  • A Japanese study found that participants using green tea extracts were most easily able to lose weight, lower blood pressure levels and get rid of harmful LDL cholesterol. Clinical studies suggest that green tea’s polyphenols create a fat-burning effect in the body, as well as increase metabolism.
  • Green tea is a well-known digestive stimulant. It has been shown to reduce intestinal gas and may even aid in preventing and treating inflammation-based digestive disorders.
  • Green tea has been used in traditional chinese medicine to keep blood sugar levels stabilised by regulating glucose levels in the body.
  • Green tea may slow the inflammation response as well as the breakdown of cartilage in arthritic individuals.
  • Green tea may act as an immune booster.
